What the installation actually involves
We start with a load calculation for the space so the BTU capacity fits the room instead of guessing. Then we set the outdoor unit on a pad or bracket, mount the indoor head high on an exterior-facing wall, and drill one small penetration for the line set, drain and control wiring. The refrigerant lines get evacuated and charged properly before startup. Most single-head jobs finish in a day. Multi-zone systems take longer because each head needs its own line run and a clean drain path.
What we check and install
We look at electrical capacity first, since a mini-split needs its own circuit and the panel has to support it. We check where condensate can drain by gravity, because a bad drain slope shows up as a wet wall later. Outdoor placement matters here: we keep the condenser out of afternoon sun where we can and away from dust-heavy ground so the coil stays breathable. We install the mounting plate level, seal the wall penetration against blowing dust, and verify airflow and temperature split at every head before we leave.
How we decide a mini-split is the right call
A mini-split makes sense when the problem is one or two rooms, not the whole house. If your central system cools most of the home fine and only the back bedroom runs hot, adding a zone usually beats replacing equipment that still works. If ducts are leaking or undersized, we will say so, because a mini-split will not fix bad distribution elsewhere. We also flag when a straightforward duct repair or a properly sized central replacement is the better spend. You get the reasoning, then you decide.

Can one outdoor unit handle several rooms?
Yes. Multi-zone systems run two to five indoor heads off one condenser, each with its own thermostat. We size the outdoor unit for the combined load and plan line runs before we quote the work.
How much wall damage does the install cause?
Usually one hole roughly three inches across through the exterior wall for the line set and drain. We seal it inside and out. The line set outside runs in a cover so it looks finished.
Does a ductless mini-split heat as well as cool?
Most heat pump mini-splits do both, which covers cool desert mornings and mountain winters. If heating matters for your room, tell us up front so we specify equipment rated for your area's low temperatures.
