The heat pump symptoms we hear most
- It blows cool air when I ask for heat Reversing valve or changeover fault, or a system stuck on backup
- The outdoor unit is buried in ice Defrost control, sensor or low charge
- The heat pump runs and runs and never satisfies the thermostat Low refrigerant charge, dirty coil or failing compressor
- There is a loud clunk every time it switches modes Reversing valve solenoid or compressor mounting
- The furnace side never kicks in on cold mornings Dual-fuel changeover, outdoor sensor or control board
People call this heat pump repair or heat pump service. Same visit, same written quote, same technician.
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Check the thermostat is set to heat, the target temperature is above the room temperature, and swap in fresh batteries if the display is dim or blank.
- 2Look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker on the indoor and outdoor circuits, and reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us.
- 3Change the filter if it looks grey or loaded. Restricted airflow causes a long list of heat pump faults.
- 4Clear leaves, dust drifts, windblown trash and stored items away from the outdoor unit so it has room to breathe, and walk the house confirming supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heating mode?
Usually the reversing valve has not shifted, the system has dropped into a defrost cycle, or the charge is low. On dual-fuel setups it can also mean the changeover to the furnace never happened. We test the valve and the control call to tell which.
Is ice on the outdoor unit normal?
A light frost that clears within a few minutes of a defrost cycle is normal in cold weather. Thick ice covering the coil, or ice that stays for hours, is not. That points at the defrost sensor, the board, airflow or refrigerant charge.
What is a dual-fuel system and why does mine act strange?
A dual-fuel setup pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and hands off to the furnace when outdoor temperatures drop. Problems usually come from the outdoor sensor, the changeover setting or the control board, so it runs the wrong stage.
Can you repair a heat pump that also cools?
Yes. A heat pump is one system running in two directions, so a heating fault often shows up again in summer. We repair it in whichever mode is failing and check the other mode before we leave so nothing surprises you later.
How long does a heat pump repair take?
Many faults are handled in a single visit, including capacitors, contactors, sensors and control boards. Reversing valves, compressors and refrigerant leak repairs take longer and may need a return trip once we have the part. We tell you which on site.
Should I repair or replace an older heat pump?
It depends on the failed part, the age of the system and how the rest of it is holding up. A cheap electrical part on a sound system is easy. A compressor or major leak on a tired unit deserves a straight replacement conversation.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill out the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and whether the outdoor unit is running. That tells us which parts and gauges to load on the truck before we leave.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow, refrigerant pressures, and the condenser coil. Desert dust plugs coils and dying capacitors are common. You get the finding in plain words before we touch a part.
- Step 3
Repair and verify
We make the repair, then run the system and measure supply air temperature and amp draw so we know it is actually cooling or heating. We tell you what we saw and what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us
- We know rooftop unitsHalf the valley has a package unit on the roof, baking all summer. We are up there regularly, so we know how those cabinets fail, where the drain pans rust, and how heat and sun break down wiring and blower assemblies.
- Dust is the local enemyFine desert dust mats onto condenser coils and chokes airflow, and the system runs hot until something gives up. We check the coil on every call and tell you honestly whether cleaning will fix your cooling problem.
- July gets treated like JulyA dead condenser when it is 112 outside is not a routine call. We prioritise homes with no cooling, and we say clearly when we can be there instead of leaving you guessing all afternoon.
- Heating tooDesert nights get cold and furnaces sit unused for months. We do heater repair and furnace repair, including no-ignition problems, bad igniters, and blowers that hum without moving air. Same straight explanation, no upsell speech.

- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
