Top-rated independent heating and cooling across southern Nevada and the desert Southwest

Defrost Cycle Problems

We repair heat pump defrost cycle faults for homeowners across Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah, from stuck reversing valves to failed defrost boards and sensors. You need us when the outdoor unit is caked in frost or ice on a cold morning, when heating output drops off, or when the system runs a defrost cycle every few minutes and never settles. Turn the system to emergency heat if you have it, leave the ice alone, and call us to book a visit.

What a defrost cycle repair involves

A heat pump pulls heat from outdoor air, so the outdoor coil gets colder than the air around it and collects frost. The defrost cycle reverses the refrigerant flow for a few minutes to melt it off. When that sequence fails, ice builds until airflow stops. We watch the unit through a full cycle, read the control board's call for defrost, check the outdoor coil temperature sensor and confirm the reversing valve actually shifts. Then we repair the part that broke instead of guessing.

What we check and replace

We start at the defrost control board and the timer or demand sensor that tells it when to act. From there we test the coil sensor or thermostat clip, the reversing valve solenoid, the outdoor fan relay and the auxiliary heat strips that cover the room while defrost runs. Dust and blown grit in this region pack the outdoor coil solid, so we clean it and clear debris from around the cabinet. Refrigerant charge gets verified, because a low system frosts up no matter how good the board is.

How we decide it is the right call

Frost on the outdoor coil in cold weather is normal. A solid block of ice, frost that never melts, or a unit cycling in and out of defrost every ten minutes is not. If your heating repair history shows repeated ice-ups, the control side is usually the culprit rather than the compressor. We tell you plainly when a board or sensor fixes it and when the age and condition of the heat pump make replacement the more sensible spend. You get the reasoning, not just the price of a part.

Defrost Cycle Problems — quick answers

Is frost on my heat pump always a problem?

No. A light coat of frost on the outdoor coil in cold weather is expected, and the defrost cycle should clear it within minutes. Solid ice, or frost that stays all day, means the cycle is not completing.

Should I chip the ice off myself?

Please do not. Chipping or prying can puncture the coil and release refrigerant, which turns a repair into a replacement. Switch to emergency heat if your thermostat offers it and call us for air conditioning repair and heat pump service.

Why does my heat pump steam during defrost?

That steam and the whoosh you hear are normal. The system briefly runs in cooling mode to warm the outdoor coil, melting frost into water that evaporates. It should last a few minutes, then heating resumes.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill out the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and whether the outdoor unit is running. That tells us which parts and gauges to load on the truck before we leave.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow, refrigerant pressures, and the condenser coil. Desert dust plugs coils and dying capacitors are common. You get the finding in plain words before we touch a part.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system and measure supply air temperature and amp draw so we know it is actually cooling or heating. We tell you what we saw and what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know rooftop unitsHalf the valley has a package unit on the roof, baking all summer. We are up there regularly, so we know how those cabinets fail, where the drain pans rust, and how heat and sun break down wiring and blower assemblies.
  • Dust is the local enemyFine desert dust mats onto condenser coils and chokes airflow, and the system runs hot until something gives up. We check the coil on every call and tell you honestly whether cleaning will fix your cooling problem.
  • July gets treated like JulyA dead condenser when it is 112 outside is not a routine call. We prioritise homes with no cooling, and we say clearly when we can be there instead of leaving you guessing all afternoon.
  • Heating tooDesert nights get cold and furnaces sit unused for months. We do heater repair and furnace repair, including no-ignition problems, bad igniters, and blowers that hum without moving air. Same straight explanation, no upsell speech.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
