AC Compressor Repair

We repair and replace failing AC compressors in homes across Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah, including rooftop package units that take the full brunt of summer sun. You need this work when the outdoor unit hums but will not start, the breaker trips every afternoon, or the air from your vents has gone room temperature while the fan keeps running. Shut the system off at the thermostat so it stops short cycling, then call us for air conditioning repair and we will diagnose the compressor before anything gets replaced.

What AC compressor repair actually involves

The compressor is the pump that moves refrigerant through the system, and it sits inside the outdoor or rooftop cabinet. Our technician reads electrical draw at startup, checks the capacitor and contactor feeding it, tests winding resistance, and measures refrigerant pressures on both sides. Sometimes the compressor is fine and a failed start component or a burnt contactor is the whole problem. When the compressor itself has shorted or seized, we talk through replacement against the age and condition of the rest of the system.

What we check and what we install

We start with the cheap failures because they are common in this heat. Capacitors swell and quit, contactors pit and weld shut, and a coil packed with dust raises head pressure until the compressor overheats and drops out on internal overload. We clean coils, replace failed electrical parts, and confirm airflow at the indoor side. If the compressor needs replacing, we install a matched replacement, evacuate the line set properly, and recharge to the manufacturer's stated weight before verifying performance.

How we decide replacement is the right call

A compressor swap is a big piece of work, so we do not recommend it on a guess. We look at whether the motor has grounded out, whether the refrigerant is contaminated after a burnout, and how much life is left in the coil, blower and cabinet. On an older rooftop unit with a rusted base and a leaking coil, a new system usually makes more sense. We lay out both paths with what each one gets you and let you decide.

AC Compressor Repair — quick answers

Can a compressor be repaired, or does it always need replacing?

Often the compressor is fine and the fault sits in the capacitor, contactor or wiring feeding it. Those we repair the same visit. A shorted or seized compressor cannot be rebuilt in place and has to be replaced.

Why did my compressor fail in the middle of summer?

Heat and dust. A coil caked with desert grit cannot shed heat, so pressures climb and the compressor works harder until it trips on overload. Low refrigerant from a leak does similar damage over time.

Is it safe to keep running the AC while I wait?

Turn it off at the thermostat. Repeated attempts to start a failing compressor can trip breakers and damage other components. Leave the breaker alone if it has tripped more than once and call us.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill out the quote form. We ask what changed, when it started, and whether the outdoor unit is running. That tells us which parts and gauges to load on the truck before we leave.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow, refrigerant pressures, and the condenser coil. Desert dust plugs coils and dying capacitors are common. You get the finding in plain words before we touch a part.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and verify

We make the repair, then run the system and measure supply air temperature and amp draw so we know it is actually cooling or heating. We tell you what we saw and what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us

  • We know rooftop unitsHalf the valley has a package unit on the roof, baking all summer. We are up there regularly, so we know how those cabinets fail, where the drain pans rust, and how heat and sun break down wiring and blower assemblies.
  • Dust is the local enemyFine desert dust mats onto condenser coils and chokes airflow, and the system runs hot until something gives up. We check the coil on every call and tell you honestly whether cleaning will fix your cooling problem.
  • July gets treated like JulyA dead condenser when it is 112 outside is not a routine call. We prioritise homes with no cooling, and we say clearly when we can be there instead of leaving you guessing all afternoon.
  • Heating tooDesert nights get cold and furnaces sit unused for months. We do heater repair and furnace repair, including no-ignition problems, bad igniters, and blowers that hum without moving air. Same straight explanation, no upsell speech.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
