How fast can you get out when my AC quits in July?

Why do rooftop package units fail so often here?
Sun, heat and dust. A rooftop package unit takes direct sun all day, the coils pull in fine desert grit that mats into the fins, and the whole cabinet cooks. Restricted airflow makes the compressor work harder until it trips on high pressure or stops for good. Blown insulation on rooftop duct runs also dries and cracks, so you lose cooling between the unit and your vents. Regular coil cleaning is the cheapest thing you can do for one of these.
What can I check myself before calling?
Four things, and all of them are safe. Check the thermostat is set to cool and has fresh batteries. Look for a tripped breaker at the panel. Pull the filter and see if it is grey and packed. Walk the outdoor unit and clear away tumbleweed, bags and gravel so it can breathe, and confirm your supply vents are open inside. Anything involving refrigerant, gas or high voltage is ours to touch, not yours.
What should I have ready when I call?
The age of the system if you know it, the brand on the data plate, and what you are actually seeing. Warm air out of the vents is a different call than no air at all. Tell us if the outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin, if there is water staining a ceiling, or if the breaker keeps tripping. If you have had work done recently, mention that too. Details on the phone mean the right parts on the truck.
