The four things that decide it
Age, fault type, parts availability and system matching. Age matters because a system that has already run a decade of desert summers has worn bearings, tired contactors and a coil that dust has been sandblasting for years. Fault type matters more. A failed capacitor or a bad contactor is a small, contained repair on almost any age of system. A burned-out compressor or a leaking evaporator coil is a different conversation. Parts availability decides whether we can even get the piece. Matching decides whether a new part will work properly with what is already installed. We look at all four together, never one on its own.
How age actually factors in
Age alone never condemns a system. We have kept older units running well with straightforward air conditioning repair, and we have seen newer ones fail early because they sat in blowing dust with no coil cleaning. What age tells us is the odds. On an older system, fixing one major component often means the next major component is not far behind, and you end up paying twice in two summers. On a younger system, a major repair usually buys you many more years, so repair is the clear call. We say plainly which side of that line we think your unit sits on.
Fault type: small parts versus sealed system
Most AC repair calls we run are electrical or airflow related. Capacitors, contactors, control boards, blower motors, condenser fan motors, clogged drains, failed thermostats. Those are repairs, and we do them. The harder cases are sealed system problems: refrigerant leaks in a coil or line set, and compressor failure. Those involve the closed refrigerant circuit, which is technician-only work and never a DIY job. Sealed system repairs cost real money and take real time, so on an older unit that is where the replace conversation usually starts. We explain what failed and why before we recommend anything.
Parts and matching, especially on rooftop package units
Across the region, plenty of homes run rooftop package units, and they live a hard life up there in dry heat and grit. Parts availability varies. Some older models have components that are discontinued or backordered for weeks, and a house with no cooling in July cannot wait weeks. Matching matters too. If an outdoor unit needs replacing but the indoor coil is from a different generation, forcing a mismatch usually means poor performance and short equipment life. When a proper match is not possible, replacing both sides is the honest answer even though it is the bigger one.
How we think about it on the visit
We diagnose first, then talk. We find what failed, check the rest of the system, look at coil condition, airflow and electrical components, and tell you the specific fault. Then we lay out your options: this repair, or replacement, and what each one realistically gets you. Cases where replacement genuinely wins are honest ones. Compressor failure on an old unit. A leaking coil with no available replacement. Repeated failures on a system that has already had several repairs. Ductwork and sizing problems that no part swap will fix. If a repair makes sense, we say so and we do it.

There are a few safe checks worth doing. Confirm the thermostat is set to cool and has fresh batteries. Check whether a breaker has tripped. Change a dirty filter. Clear leaves, dust and debris away from the outdoor unit so it can breathe. Make sure supply vents are open and not blocked by furniture. Anything involving refrigerant, gas or high voltage is ours to handle. If you ever smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, get everyone out of the building first, call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us for the heating repair.

Is it worth repairing an air conditioner that is over ten years old?
Often yes, if the fault is a small electrical or motor part. Age becomes the deciding factor when the failure is in the sealed system, like a compressor or leaking coil, since more failures usually follow.
Can you replace just the outdoor unit?
Sometimes, but only if it matches the existing indoor coil properly. A forced mismatch performs poorly and shortens equipment life, so we check compatibility before recommending a partial replacement.
How do I know if a refrigerant leak is repairable?
It depends where it is. Accessible line set leaks can often be repaired. Leaks inside a coil usually mean replacing that coil, and on an older unit that is when replacement becomes the better choice.
