What Nonstop Running Actually Means
A heat pump is built to run long cycles. Unlike a furnace that blasts heat and shuts off, a heat pump pulls warmth from outdoor air and moves it inside slowly and steadily. On a cold morning across the region, running for an hour or more straight is normal behavior, not a fault. The question is whether the house is holding temperature. If your thermostat says 68 and the room reads 68, the system is doing its job. If it runs constantly and the indoor temperature keeps sliding down, something is wrong and it is worth a look.
Cause Family One: Airflow and Settings
Start with the cheapest possibilities, because they are also the most common. A loaded filter chokes the return air and forces the system to run far longer for less heat. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing in reverse. Thermostat settings matter too. A schedule set to a temperature you did not intend, a fan set to ON instead of AUTO, or dying batteries giving bad readings will all look like a system that never stops. We find one of these on a good share of the calls we run for a heat pump that never shuts off.
Cause Family Two: Outdoor Unit and Defrost
Heat pumps build frost on the outdoor coil in cold weather and periodically reverse to melt it off. That defrost cycle is normal, and you may see steam and hear a whoosh. What is not normal is a coil packed in solid ice that never clears, which points to a failed defrost control, a bad sensor, or a fan that is not turning. Dust and grit are hard on outdoor coils across Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah, and a dirty coil cannot shed heat or frost properly. Clearing leaves, tumbleweed and debris from around the cabinet is safe and helps.
Cause Family Three: Refrigerant, Reversing Valve, or Undersizing
If airflow is clean and the coil is clear, the problem is usually inside the refrigeration circuit. Low refrigerant means the system moves less heat per cycle, so it runs and runs and never catches up. A reversing valve that will not fully shift leaves the heat pump stuck partway between heating and cooling, blowing lukewarm air. Auxiliary or emergency heat locked on will also run your system hard. None of this is homeowner territory. Refrigerant and high voltage components need gauges, meters and training, and guessing at them makes the repair more expensive.
What Is Safe to Check, and What We Do Differently
Safe checks are short. Change the filter, put fresh batteries in the thermostat and confirm it is set to HEAT at the temperature you want, look for a tripped breaker, open any closed vents, and clear debris away from the outdoor unit. That is the whole list. When we arrive for heating repair or heater repair, we measure temperature rise across the coil, check static pressure, read refrigerant pressures and superheat against outdoor conditions, test the defrost board and sensors, and confirm the reversing valve energizes.
