What "no heat at all" actually tells us
No heat at all means the call for heat is not reaching the burner or the heat strips, or it is reaching them and something is shutting the sequence down before warm air moves. That is different from weak heat, which usually points to airflow or a failing component that is still trying. Cause family one: controls and power, the cheap end
Most no-heat calls we run in winter start here. Dead thermostat batteries, a thermostat knocked to Cool or Off, a tripped breaker at the panel, or a service switch someone flipped during other work. On rooftop units there is often a disconnect at the unit itself that gets left open. A clogged filter can also shut a system down by overheating the heat exchanger and tripping a limit, which reads as no heat to you. None of these are expensive. All of them are worth ruling out before anyone drives out, because a thermostat set to Fan On will blow cool air and feel like total failure.
Cause family two: ignition and safety lockouts
If the system tries and quits, you are usually looking at ignition or a safety device doing its job. Hot surface igniters crack. Flame sensors carbon up and stop proving flame, so the gas valve closes a few seconds after lighting. Pressure switches lock the sequence out when a flue or inducer is blocked, and rollout or limit switches lock out on overheating. On heat pumps, a failed reversing valve or a defrost board leaves you with a system running in the wrong mode. These are all diagnosable parts, but they sit on gas and high-voltage circuits, so this family belongs to a technician and not to a homeowner with a screwdriver.
What is safe for you to check first
Five things, and then stop. Put fresh batteries in the thermostat and confirm it is set to Heat with the fan on Auto and the setpoint above room temperature. Check the panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. Change the air filter if it is grey or matted. Walk the outdoor unit or the rooftop area and clear leaves, dust and blown debris away from it. Open closed supply vents and pull furniture off returns. That is the whole safe list. Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Can I reset a furnace myself?
