What Crowding the Unit Actually Does
That outdoor unit dumps heat from inside your home into the air around it. If the air cannot leave, it gets pulled back through the coil, and the system runs hotter and longer for the same cooling. In our summers that gap between working hard and failing is thin. Over a couple of seasons we see burned contactors, seized fan motors and compressors that trip on high pressure by mid afternoon. Dust is the other half of the story. Fine grit across the region packs into the coil fins like felt, and once it does, plants and fences pressed against the cabinet make it worse. Neglect rarely breaks anything on day one. It shortens the life of every part in that cabinet.
The Clearance That Keeps It Breathing
Give the sides of the unit roughly two feet of open space and leave the top completely clear. Nothing stacked on the fan grille, no plywood, no patio cushions, no planters. If you have a rooftop package unit, the same idea applies up there, and the return and supply ends need room too. Keep shrubs trimmed back rather than letting them lean in, and remember that a hedge grows toward the unit every year whether you look at it or not. Gravel or bare ground under the cabinet beats mulch and bark, which blow into the coil. Storage against the unit is the one we find most often, and it is the easiest to fix.
The Ten Minute Habit, and How Often
Walk the unit once a month during cooling season and once again before you switch to heat. Pick up leaves, palm fronds, tumbleweed and cottonwood fluff from around the base and off the top. Pull anything the wind stuck to the sides. Trim back new growth so you still have that two foot gap. Check the filter inside while you are thinking about it, since a clogged filter and a blocked coil punish the system the same way. After a dust storm or a windy stretch, look sooner. That is the whole habit. It is clearing debris and looking, nothing more, and it catches most of what we get called out for.
What Not to Do Out There
Do not open the cabinet, do not pull the fan grille and do not aim a pressure washer at the coil. There is high voltage in that unit even with the thermostat off, and bent fins or a punctured line turn a cleaning into an air conditioning repair. Refrigerant lines and electrical connections are ours to touch, not yours. Covers are another one. A full wrap in winter traps moisture and gives rodents a nest, and people forget to remove them before the first hot week. If the unit sits under a tree that drops constantly, the fix is trimming the tree, not building a lid over the fan.
Signs It Has Already Gone Too Far
Warm air from the vents on a hot afternoon, longer and longer run times, or a system that cools fine in the morning and quits by three o'clock all point to a unit that cannot shed heat. Listen for a hard hum then a click as it shuts down, and look for ice on the lines or a coil you cannot see daylight through. Water pooling, a burning smell, or a breaker that trips more than once are all reasons to stop and call. Can I plant shrubs around the AC unit to hide it?
Yes, if you keep about two feet of clear space on every side and nothing over the top. Choose plants that stay small, and trim them every season. Avoid anything that drops seeds, fluff or heavy leaf litter into the coil.
Should I cover the outdoor unit in winter?
We generally advise against a full wrap. It traps moisture and invites rodents into the wiring. Clearing debris off the top is enough. If you do use a cover, remove it completely before the first warm stretch.
How often does the outdoor coil need real cleaning?
