What a Neglected Filter Does Over Time
A clogged filter starves the blower for air. That sounds harmless until you follow the chain. Less air across the indoor coil means the coil runs colder than designed, and in the dry heat across Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah it can ice over even when it is well over 100 degrees outside. Ice blocks airflow further, the compressor works against conditions it was never built for, and refrigerant can return to it as liquid. On the heating side, restricted airflow overheats the heat exchanger and trips the limit switch again and again. Dust that gets past a collapsed filter settles on the coil and the blower wheel, where it stays until someone charges you to clean it.
The Habit That Prevents All Of It
Pick a day you already remember and tie the filter to it. The first of the month, the day you pay the mortgage, whatever sticks. Buy filters four or six at a time so there is never a reason to put it off. Write the install date on the cardboard edge with a marker before you slide it in, because nobody remembers accurately. Note the size printed on the frame in your phone so you are not standing in the aisle guessing. Check that the airflow arrow points toward the furnace or air handler. That is the whole habit, and it takes about two minutes.
How Often, Realistically
For a standard one inch pleated filter in our region, look at it monthly and plan on changing it every 30 to 60 days. Homes on the edge of open desert, near construction, or on a dirt road will hit 30 days easily. Dogs, cats, allergies or a remodel in progress push it shorter still. Thicker media filters, the four or five inch cabinets, generally run several months, but check the first one at 90 days to learn your own rate. Rooftop package units pull outside air through a dusty environment all summer, so those deserve a look every month during cooling season. Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is done.
Warning Signs It Is Already Too Late
Weak air from the supply vents while the outdoor unit is clearly running is the classic sign. So is a system that cools the front of the house but never the back bedroom. Listen for a return grille that whistles or a filter that sucks flat against the frame, both of which mean the blower is fighting for air. Ice on the copper line at the outdoor unit, water around the indoor unit, or short cycles that start and stop every few minutes all point the same direction. In winter, a furnace that runs a few minutes then shuts off is often overheating from restriction. Change the filter, then call us if it repeats.
When A New Filter Does Not Fix It
A fresh filter solves a lot, but it will not undo damage already done. If the coil is coated, if the blower wheel is packed with dust, or if the system iced over and lost refrigerant through a stressed joint, that is hands-on work. Turn the system to off and let ice melt fully before running it again, and do not attempt anything involving refrigerant lines, gas connections or high voltage. Can I just vacuum the filter and put it back?
No. Pleated filters are not made to be cleaned, and vacuuming opens gaps in the media that let dust through to the coil. Washable metal filters are the exception, and those must be fully dry before reinstalling.
Does a thicker, denser filter cool better?
Not necessarily. A very high-restriction filter in a system not designed for it reduces airflow, which hurts cooling and strains the blower. Match the filter to what the equipment can pull. Ask us what your system handles.
Should I change filters more often in summer?
Yes. The system runs far more hours during our cooling season and moves much more dust through the house. Check monthly from spring through fall, and expect to replace closer to every 30 days.
