Do This First: The Safety Steps, In Order
1. If you smell gas, sulfur or rotten eggs, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, leave the building immediately with everyone inside, including pets. 2. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. Do not go back in until they say it is safe. 3. If you see smoke or scorch marks, treat it as a fire and call 911. 4. If there is no gas smell, no smoke and no alarm, switch the system off at the thermostat. 5. If the smell continues with the system off, or gets stronger, leave and call for help. 6. Once the house is safe, call us for heating repair and we will find the source.
What Not To Do
Do not open the furnace cabinet, pull a burner panel or relight a pilot yourself. Do not reset a breaker over and over to see if the smell comes back, because repeated resets on a shorted circuit can start a fire. Do not spray anything into a vent or duct to mask the odor. Do not tape over or unplug a carbon monoxide alarm that is chirping or alarming. Do not keep running the system to burn the smell off if it smells like hot plastic, melted rubber or electrical burning. The only checks that are safe for you are the thermostat setting and batteries, the breaker position, your filter and the vents.
Dust Burn-Off Versus Something Worse
Dust burn-off is the common one. Dust settles on the heat exchanger over a long cooling season, and the first few heating cycles cook it off. It smells like a hot iron or a dusty light bulb, it is faint, and it fades within fifteen or twenty minutes and does not return the next day. Anything else deserves a look. A sharp plastic or fishy odor points to overheating wire insulation or a failing capacitor. A hot metal smell with the blower running slow can mean a seizing motor or a belt dragging. Burning with visible smoke, soot marks or a sooty film near registers is a stop-now situation.
Why Vents Smell In Our Climate
Across Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah, fine dust gets everywhere, and rooftop package units take the worst of it. Dust packs into blower wheels, coats heat exchangers and blankets circuit boards, so it has plenty of surface to scorch on. Neglected filters make it worse. When a filter loads up, airflow drops, the heat exchanger runs hotter than it should and the limit switch starts cycling the burners. That overheating smells like burning and it shortens the life of the metal. Attic and rooftop equipment also bakes in summer sun, which hardens wire insulation until it cracks. Both problems show up the first cold week, when nobody has looked at the system in months.
When To Call Us
Call us if the smell lasts more than half an hour, comes back on the next heating cycle, smells like plastic or electrical, or comes with a tripped breaker, soot, weak airflow or a system that shuts itself down. How long should a dust burning smell last?
Usually fifteen to twenty minutes over the first couple of heating cycles, then it should stop for good. If it returns days later, or smells sharp, plastic or electrical instead of dusty, shut the system off and call us.
Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?
Yes. A loaded filter starves the system of airflow, so the heat exchanger runs hotter than designed and that overheated metal and dust smells like burning. Change the filter, and if the smell stays, have us check airflow and the limit switch.
My AC smells like burning, not the heat. Is that different?
It usually is. In cooling mode a burning smell points to the blower motor, a capacitor, a contactor or wiring rather than a heat exchanger. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call us for air conditioner repair before running it again.
