What Short Cycling Actually Means
A furnace is built to run a longer burn, bring the house up to temperature, and shut off. When it quits after a few minutes and restarts, something is either telling it to stop early or it is stopping itself to stay safe. Most of the time the furnace is overheating inside the cabinet and a limit switch is cutting the burners, or the thermostat is getting bad information about room temperature. Neither one is normal. Short cycling burns out ignitors, blower motors and heat exchangers faster than steady running does, so it is worth chasing down before winter really settles in.
Cause One: Airflow, And It Is Usually The Filter
Start here because it is the cheapest and the most common. A furnace needs a steady volume of air moving across the heat exchanger to carry heat away. Choke that airflow with a loaded filter, closed vents, or a return grille blocked by furniture, and the cabinet temperature climbs until the high limit switch shuts the burners off. Cause Two: The Thermostat And Its Location
A thermostat with weak batteries, a loose wire, or a bad spot on the wall will cut the furnace off early.
