First: safety before troubleshooting
1. If you smell gas or rotten eggs, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get everyone out of the building first. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. Then call us. 2. If you see smoke, scorch marks around the panel, or you smell hot plastic or burning insulation, leave the house and call 911. 3. If the breaker itself is hot to the touch or buzzing, leave it off and call us. 4. Otherwise, set the thermostat to off so the system stops trying to start, and leave the breaker off until someone looks at it.
What not to do
Do not reset the breaker over and over. Each restart pushes a big surge through a compressor that may already be struggling, and repeated attempts can turn a repairable fault into a replacement. Do not tape, wedge or hold a breaker in. Do not swap in a larger breaker to stop the nuisance, since the breaker size is matched to the wire and a bigger one lets the wire overheat instead. Do not open the disconnect box or the electrical panel cover, and do not touch capacitors or contactors. Do not add refrigerant or attempt any gas work. Those are high-voltage and pressurised systems, and they are our job.
The safe checks you can do yourself
With the thermostat off, there are a few things worth a look. Check the air filter. A filter packed with the fine dust common across Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah chokes airflow, and a strained blower pulls more current. Replace it if light will not pass through. Walk out to the outdoor unit or up to the roof only if you have safe access, and clear leaves, tumbleweed and windblown trash from around it. Confirm supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture. Check thermostat batteries and settings. If the breaker still trips after that, we take it from there.
Why HVAC systems trip breakers
Most causes fall into a short list. A failing capacitor leaves the compressor or fan motor straining to start, so amp draw spikes. A dirty condenser coil traps heat, and in desert conditions coils load up with dust and cottonwood fluff quickly. Low refrigerant, a seized fan motor, a shorted compressor winding, damaged wiring chewed by rodents, or a tired breaker at the end of its life will all do it. Rooftop package units add sun-baked wiring and heat-soaked contactors to the mix. Heating side, a blower motor or a bad control board can trip a breaker in winter too. Diagnosis needs meters, not guesses.

Can I keep resetting the breaker until the technician arrives?
Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated restarts hammer the compressor and can turn a small electrical fault into a failed unit, which makes the repair far larger than it needed to be.
Could it just be a bad breaker and not the HVAC system?
